Installing Google Analytics 4 with Google Tag Manager

Google renamed its App+Web properties to Google Analytics 4. GA4 takes a different approach to data collection and reporting than what we used to seeing in Universal Analytics (UA). Data is collected differently in GA4, as it focuses more on the events and user’s interactions.

In this blog, we’ll walk you through how to install Google Analytics 4 with Google Tag Manager.

Create GA4 Property in Google Analytics

If you want to create a new GA4 property, then go to Admin Panel, select “Create Property”.

Enter the property name. Choose your Company’s country, reporting time zone and the main currency.

GA4 doesn’t have views like its predecessor (UA). Instead, it has Data Streams. The data stream measures Pageview Request and certain events automatically such as Scrolls, Outbound Link Clicks, Site Search, File downloads and more. Expand the Add Stream drop-down and select your option.

In this example, we’re tracking a website so we’ll select web.

Configure your Data Stream by entering your Website URL and the Stream name.

You will also get an option to enable/disable Enhanced Measurement. It’s designed to help you get events in the reports without configuring them in Google Tag Manager.

Click “Create Stream” when finished.

Create GA4 configuration tag in Google Tag Manager

After creating a Data Stream (web), you will see a Measurement ID. Copy the Measurement ID as it is required for setting up the GA4 configuration tag in Google Tag manager.

Then go to your Google Tag Manager container > Tags > New and choose GA4 configuration

In the Measurement ID field, enter the ID that you copied in the GA4. Enable the Send a page view event when this configuration loads, If you want to track pageviews automatically.

In the Triggering section, select All pages and then name the Tag, e.g. GA4–Configuration. Save your new tag.

Publish your tag from Google Tag Manager

After publishing your changes, look for data to start populating in the Real-time report in your new GA4 property.

Now that you’ve set up GA4, you start using it to track users and their actions more effectively.
